Presentation and creation

The Middelheim Museum presents a highly diverse range of collection pieces and exhibition projects.

The Middelheim Museum presents a highly diverse range of collection pieces and exhibition projects, combining both in a well-considered, selective acquisition policy linked to continuous reflection.

The Middelheim Museum is conducting ongoing research into the many facets of sculpture and their inter-relationship. Spatially oriented art is a vast field: from monolithic sculptures to installations, land art to performance art, sculpture to architecture, the indestructible to the ephemeral.

Each year, the museum organises one major summer exhibition, supplemented with a number of projects aimed at art connoisseurs throughout the rest of the year. Solo and group exhibitions, collection presentations and close collaborations with artists.

By focussing on creating new works for exhibitions, by actively overseeing and supporting this process and aligning its exhibition programme with its acquisition policy, the museum creates new opportunities together with – well established and or emerging - artists in his or her work. The museum can thus also show new artworks for the first time to the public.

In 2014, a reflection group was established, charged with thinking about the cohesion between the exhibition and the collection policy.
