Spitsbergen

10 July until 24 August 2008

Seven artists use the desolate and intriguing landscape of Spitsbergen as a breeding ground for artistic expression.

In the summer of 2007, the experienced arctic explorer and scientist Professor Louis Beyens of the University of Antwerp left on his fifth expedition with students to Spitsbergen. Last year, seven artists also took part in the expedition, in addition to the students and scientists.

  • Caroline Coolen (ceramics/sculpture)
  • Eva De Roovere (musician/singer)
  • Diego Franssens (photographer)
  • Tom Liekens (painter)
  • Ramsey Nasr (author/poet)
  • Johan Terryn (radio and TV producer)
  • Katleen Vermeir (video artist)

Their mission: to use the desolate and intriguing landscape of Spitsbergen as a breeding ground for artistic expression.

The exhibition and the accompanying art book are the result of a confrontation and a dialogue between art and science in the Arctic. The writers presented their projects in the Bourla Theatre earlier in the year, while the visual artists exhibited their work in Hessenhuis.

A partnership with the University of Antwerp.
