DE SOKKEL #4: André Romão - Notes on the history of violence

7 October 2012 until 21 April 2013

The Klein Antwerpen community association and the Middelheim Museum join forces twice a year for an experimental project outside the museum.

The role of art in public spaces is questioned with these interventions, which also put the historically valuable city park in the spotlight.

After successful interventions by Henk Visch (NL)Ria Pacquée (B) and the Romanian artists Cristian Bors & Marius Ritiu the Portuguese artist André Romão is now exhibiting a new sculpture on the nineteenth-century plinth in Antwerp’s City Park.

André Romão (b. 1984, Lisbon) was selected during an international open call, which was launched by AIR Antwerp together with the Middelheim Museum. During a four-month residency at AIR Antwerp, André Romão created a sculpture for the fourth De Sokkel in the park.

In his multimedia installations, André Romão raises critical questions about the form and function of (contemporary) sculpture. His work examines the overlaps, absences and cracks in terms of meaning of historic, literary and artistic episodes. As such he taps into a wide scope of meanings, a large area between ethics and aesthetics, politic and poetry, history and mysticism. Romão is especially interested in the (inter)human and the notion of continuity in history and in culture.

Location

Antwerp central park: on the side of Quinten Matsyslei, near the play area and the skate park.

Opening

De Sokkel will be inaugurated on Sunday 7 October 2012 at 11 a.m. The event is part of the neighbourhood festival which Klein Antwerpen organises every year in the park.

About De Sokkel

Twice a year, the Klein Antwerpen community association and the Middelheim Museum join forces to add a cultural dimension to the city park using an empty plinth. For this fourth edition, they have chosen to work with AIR Antwerp, which offers residencies to international artists.

A co-production of the Klein Antwerpen neighbourhood association and the Middelheim Museum. With the support of the District of Antwerp.
