Crossing

12 March until 23 April 2011

An exhibition about the future of art in public spaces. With works and sketches of exhibiting sculptures in an installation by the artist Hans Wuyts.

From Middelheim Museum to the city and vice versa

The Middelheim Museum highlights its individuality within the work of Contemporary Art Heritage Flanders (CAHF), the partnership between Mu.Zee, SMAK, M HKA and Middelheim Museum with the exhibition entitled “Crossing”. The exhibition was inspired by publications about the collections of the four Flemish institutions for contemporary art.

The main question in this project is situated in the reflection on the relationship between the collection of the open-air museum and the artworks in public space in Antwerp. Which results does this interaction have in practice? And which opportunities does this create for the future?

The publication about the Middelheim Museum will contain a theoretical reflection by Jeroen Boomgaard, a lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy as well as proposals by artists about sculptures that could leave the Middelheim Museum for the city and vice versa. A reflection which enables to add a new significance, a new dimension to these sculptures.

The exhibition meanwhile tries to effectively achieve this. This question is materialised in an installation by the artist Hans Wuyts with documents about and works by Cel Crabeels, Luc Deleu, Jan Dries, Dan Graham, Yoshitomo Nara and Luc Tuymans.
