Bivak Gloria

9 September until 25 November 2007

In 2006 the town councils of Antwerp and Rotterdam decided to work together more in the future in the field of culture.

HessenHuis set the ball rolling with its project, Bivak Gloria.

The cities of Rotterdam and Antwerp have always maintained a special relationship. There are significant differences. Rotterdam’s contemporary urban planning for example contrasts sharply Antwerp, where planning is more historically oriented. There are also striking commonalities: the two cities both have a major port. But above all, there is a lot of mutual curiosity.

Both cities have a rich tradition of collaborations between artists. In the framework of these agreements, the HessenHuis decided to take a closer look at a number of parameters:

  • What are the conditions for a successful partnership?
  • It also reflects on the partnership between artists in a broader context: what about the social solidarity between artists?
  • What about the active solidarity and collaboration between female artists for example?
  • What about the collaboration between nowadays between master and apprentice?
  • What are the constraints and opportunities of a collaboration between the government institution and the private collector?

Artists from both cities will formulate an answer to these questions.

The Rotterdam artist Dwight Marica and the Antwerp artist Michèle Matyn were selected and invited to become the nucleus of new partnerships.
