This dual group show uses the prehistoric North-Western Australian rock paintings in Kimberley as a starting point. It was recently revealed that these paintings are “living paintings”: they are home to red bacteria and black fungi, which continuously rejuvenate the bright colours of these paintings like “living pigments”. The Bradshaw paintings thus are a trace of the past while still being created today.
In Extra City the emphasis is on making and thinking about pictures, the origin of painting and he birth of knowledge. The Middelheim Museum focuses on the dialectic of intimacy and knowledge in our relation with art objects.
Allegory of the Cave Painting. The Other Way Around, as the second part of the exhibition in Extra City, assembles artworks by such artists as Ciprian Mureşan, Michèle Matyn, Alon Levin, Navid Nuur and Hans van Houwelingen, which engage in a dialogue with artists in the Middelheim collection such as Dan Graham, Ann Veronica Janssens and Medardo Rosso.
